Welcome to the Rossview Middle School Band Website! Please use this website to find helpful information about the band program!
All band students (grades 6 – 8) are now turning in practice sheets. Students should practice 3 hours a week (I do not care how they reach 3 hours a week as long as it is not all on one day). 3 hours a week gets a grade of 100. These sheets are due on Friday of every week (except this past week due to no related arts. This past week’s sheet is due on Monday). A copy of the practice sheet is located on each grade level page on the band website (www.rossviewmiddleschoolband.weebly.com)
Band Method Books:
All band students should have a band method book by now. Grade 7 should have book 2 (we are already using it) and Grade 8 should have book 3 (we will begin in it tomorrow!). Grade 6 should have book 1 (we are already using it!). All books are Standard of Excellence by Bruce Pearson. If you have not purchased a book for your child, please do so ASAP. You can purchase them three ways: Amazon, Mary’s Music in Clarksville, TN, or send in $12.00 cash only and I will have the AMRO Music Rep bring a book to the school.
I will be keeping a record for students who forget their instrument or band book. Each student will begin with 15 points each day for participation. If they forget their instrument it will be -10 points. If they forget their band book, it will be -5 points. Students have had ample time to acquire both.
Just a quick word on how students should bring their instrument to the band room in the morning and pick it up for the afternoon:
As soon as students enter the building in the morning, they should bring their instrument to the band room and place it in their instrument locker. (They should make sure they have a combination lock and can lock their locker. We do have some lockers that currently do not have the ability to do this. I have put in a work order for this but I was told there are only 2 men at central office that take care of all of the schools so it may be a while before this gets fixed. Unfortunately, with the amount of students we have, we simply do not have enough lockers for those who have a broken locker to switch. I will keep asking about this until they come fix it!) After students put away their instrument, they need to fill out a band pass. The band pass will allow them back into homeroom at the beginning of the day without penalty. In the afternoon, when the end of 6th period bell rings, they should go straight to the band room to pick up their instrument. They will need to fill out another band pass and then return to homeroom (again without penalty) to be dismissed to go home. They will need a band pass to not be counted tardy to homeroom.
I will begin a time in the morning beginning this week. From 6:45 a.m. – 7:20 a.m., I will open the band room for any student who would like to practice their instrument. Students who will be in the band room from this time, must be practicing or they will be asked to leave the band room. Morning band will happen every school day.
Reeds for woodwind instruments (all grade levels):
Every student that plays a reed instrument (clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon) should have at least 3 reeds to rotate between. This rotation will keep the reeds fresh and the parent from having to purchase reeds constantly. For clarinets and saxophones, I recommend Vandoren reeds or Rico reeds. You can buy these in a box. Strenghth 2.5 or 3 is recommended for 7th and 8th graders. Size 2 or 2.5 is recommended for 6th graders. You can purchase Vandoren or Rico reeds at the following websites:
Make sure you purchase the reed for the right instrument too! Clarinet reeds should be purchased for the B-flat clarinet. Alto Saxophone reeds are different than tenor saxophone and bari saxophone.
Oboe and bassoon players should have at least 3 reeds to rotate around. These can be expensive but because they will have at least 3 to rotate, you should not have to purchase them as much. The reed brand of Jones, medium soft should be great! You can find these at the following websites too:
Also, you will want the following oboe/bassoon reed case to protect the reeds (can be found on amazon) https://www.amazon.com/Rico-Storage-Humidity-Control-Bassoon/dp/B0035Z08JA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1504542619&sr=8-5&keywords=jones+reeds+oboe
Private Lessons are a great way for each student to progress quickly on their instrument! I have placed a handout above (private lesson button). The handout lists qualified teachers for each instrument. It is the hope of the Rossview band program for each child to take private lessons. I hope you will take a moment to think about the impact this could have on our program (the quality will soar through the roof!). Thank you for your consideration!
